Brima Attouga Kamara
Project type
Football - Goalkeeper
Date
June 2024
Brima Attouga Kamara, also known as 'The Guy', is undoubtedly the finest goalkeeper ever produced by Sierra Leone. His remarkable agility and extraordinary reflexes were as impressive as the performances of Sierra Leone football icons like Kama Dumbuya and Ishmael Dyfan. Many believe that if Sierra Leone were to create a Mount Rushmore of Footballers, he would rightfully stand alongside Kama Dumbuya and Ishmael Dyfan as the third choice out of four.
Attouga, who succeeded national goalkeepers like Amadu Kargbo (Les Grande), Frank Williams and Patrick Dangawallie was a well-known figure across the nation, who made his debut for Sierra Leone during the Amilcar Cabral Zone II Tournament held in Freetown in 1984. This led to his national team debut for the Leone Stars in 1994.
Throughout his career, he played for prestigious clubs such as East End Lions FC, Mighty Blackpool, and Sierra Fisheries FC, and internationally for El Mansoura in Egypt from 1997 to 1999. His exceptional performances at the Siaka Stevens stadium attracted overflowing crowds, comparable to today's English Premier League matches in the UK. With unwavering confidence, he challenged strikers and midfielders to breach his defense during games, including a memorable duel with Ports Authority legend Chico Myers in the presence of the late sports aficionado Fode Kandeh.
Regarded as one of the top five goalkeepers in African football history, Attouga posed a formidable challenge to rival nations during his outstanding tenure with the national team from 1984's Zone II tournament in Freetown to a World Cup qualifier in 1997 against Morocco. He stood as Sierra Leone's last line of defense at the 1994 and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and South Africa, respectively. Despite his untimely passing in 1999, Attouga's legacy and legend endure. He has a community stadium in Freetown named in his honor - The Brima Attouga Mini Stadium.
