St Edwards' finest and arguably Sierra Leone's all-time greatest track runner, Felix Sandy, a student of the early eighties, is a multiple-time All-American collegiate athlete, two-time Olympian, and Sierra Leone’s 400 Meters national record-holder for 36 years and counting.
Born and raised in our nation’s capital of Freetown, Sierra Leone, Felix Sandy is a well-known figure in sports circles and homes throughout the country. He attributes all his athletic successes to the blessings of having attended St. Anthony’s Primary School and yes, the prestigious St. Edwards Secondary School at May Park! A school known for nurturing some of the best of Sierra Leone’s sporting talents.
To those of us who had the opportunity to see him perform, we would say, “Felix Sandy epitomized excellence during the golden years of Track and Field in Sierra Leone,” dominating all the sprints from the one hundred meters to the four hundred meters run. Therefore, it was no surprise he grew to become one of the best on the continent, and British Commonwealth countries during this era.
In the May 1988 issue, Track and Field News “America’s premier Track & Field magazine; ranked Felix among the top-three foreign collegiate 400 meters sprinters in the United States and amongst the 15 leading times in the world that year as of the time that issue went to print.
In 1989, Felix represented Sierra Leone in the 400 meters at the All-African Championships where he made it to the finals and finished in fifth place. This fifth-place finish earned Felix an invite as a guest athlete to the 1989 British Amateur Athletic Association (AAA's) championships where he again made it to the finals placing fourth.
In the same summer of 1989, Felix represented Sierra Leone in the 400 meters at the World University Games in Duisburg, Germany where he was one of eight to make it to the 400 meters finals. His performance in the qualification rounds positioned him amongst the favourites for a medal.
However, he sustained a hamstring injury during the finals and did not complete the race. In January of 1990, Felix was the sole representative of Sierra Leone at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games where he was a semi-finalist.
Today, Felix, a master’s degree holder in Management Information Systems, resides in the U.S where he and his wife Valerie have raised all university educated children, two of whom have emulated him as Division One Student athletes: Sahr Felix Sandy, a soccer player; and, Sierra F. Sandy, a tennis player.
