Multi-Talented with a focus and dream of becoming a star footballer as it is for most young boys growing up in Sierra Leone, Haroun Korjie would however go on to become a national sprint sensation and household name who went on to medal at the All-African Games in Cairo Egypt for Sierra Leone.
Haroun Korjie grew up and honed his athletic talent in the hotbed of talented sports men and women of Sierra Leone’s Bo City. He started out playing a variety of sports (Volleyball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Basketball etc.) at the esteemed Bo School where competition was very stiff. Spotted by his PE Teacher as a truly gifted sprinter and asked to step in as a third leg runner for Bo School in a head-to-head competition against rivals CKC in an Invitation Relay, Haroun’s star shined brightly as he ran down the CKC third led runner, giving Bo School bragging rights and a cause to celebrate over their archrivals that day in Bo City.
Relocating to Freetown the Capital city to continue his schooling and get closer to the action with the top sprinters of the nation Haroun would soon emerge as a star and the top national sprinter in the country that led to him eventually being selected for national duty for international competitions.
Joining clubs like Action Stars a stable for top talents in the East end of Freetown and eventually the well-funded Fransua Athletics Club, Haroun's trajectory into global prominence was assured and surely enough after spending a year at the Institute of Sports in Paris courtesy of Fransua Athletics club he would go on to represent Sierra Leone at the 1989 All African Games in Lagos Nigeria, the 1989 Islamic Friendship Games in Kuwait City, Kuwait and the 1991 All African Games in Cairo, Egypt where he won a Silver Medal as a member of the 4x100 Meters relay Team.
His journey would continue on to the 1993 World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart Germany, The 1992 World Indoor Championships in Barcelona Spain and eventually the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. A Graduate of Sports & Exercise Science from the prestigious Brunel University in the UK, Haroun is currently the Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports in Sierra Leone and is also involved in a number of grassroots sports initiatives with the Rokel Athletics Club and Football Team. He serves as a mentor to many young and upcoming talents while providing guidance administratively to the staff at the Ministry of Sports on a range of issues.
