Kei Kamara
Project type
Football
Date
July 2024
Kei Kamara has played a vital role in Sierra Leonean football history, much like Kama Dumbuya in the 1960s and 70s, and Ishmael Dyfan in the 70s and 80s, and his own personal idol Mohamed Kallon in the 90's and early 2000's.
Originally from Kenema, Sierra Leone – a hotbed for talented strikers, Kei first displayed his potential in Sierra Leone before emigrating to the United States with his family. His journey continued at university in the NCAA at Cal State at Dominguez Hills in California, where he excelled and caught the eyes of MLS scouts.
In 2006, Kei Kamara made history as the first Sierra Leonean player drafted into the MLS, following in the footsteps of veteran Abdul T. Conteh, who had been signed by the San Jose Earthquakes in 2000. Selected by Columbus Crew as the ninth pick in the first round, Kei's career took off, spanning across 11 MLS clubs, including his current team, The L.A. FC, and two English clubs – Norwich City and Middlesbrough.
Kei Kamara is cherished by fans of the teams he has represented, but his connection with Sierra Leoneans worldwide is profound. He has been a pillar of support for the Leone Stars through challenging times, such as during and in the aftermath of the Ebola epidemic and the Mudslide Disaster of 2017, always ready to serve his national team and render assistance to his people when he can.
While Kei has retired from international football, his presence on the field continues with L.A. FC. Known as the 'Heart of Sierra Leone Football,' he demonstrates his affection for fans through his trademark heart-shaped hands in gratitude after games and during interviews.
