ABOUT ATHLETES FOR BETTER NATIONS - SIERRA LEONE
Who We Are
Athletes for Better Nations – Sierra Leone (AFBN-SLE) is a national sports development initiative using sport as a platform for education, leadership, and long-term opportunity for Sierra Leonean youth.
Sierra Leone is rich in talent, culture, and ambition. AFBN-SLE exists to ensure that this potential is supported through structured pathways that connect schools, sport, mentorship, and global opportunity.
OUR ORIGIN & LEADERSHIP
AFBN-SLE is led by Felix Sandy, appointed International Olympic Envoy for Sports Development by the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone.
This appointment reflects a national commitment to positioning sport not only as competition, but as a vehicle for youth development, national pride, and international engagement.
AFBN-SLE was established to strengthen systems — not replace institutions — by aligning schools, athletes, coaches, and partners around a shared development vision.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
AFBN-SLE is built on four core beliefs:
• Athletic talent must be developed responsibly and systematically
• Education is essential to long-term success
• Sport should produce leaders, not only athletes
• National identity and global competitiveness can coexist
Our work prioritizes sustainability, accountability, and human development over short-term results.
OUR DEVELOPMENT APPROACH
AFBN-SLE operates through an integrated model that connects:
• Sport performance
• Academic accountability
• Leadership formation
• Global exposure
This approach ensures that young people are prepared not only to compete, but to succeed beyond sport.
SIERRA LEONE'S STORY - TOLD WITH PURPOSE
Sierra Leone has produced world-class athletes, designers, and leaders when opportunity and structure were available.
More than 85% of the athletes whose journeys inform AFBN-SLE’s vision were born and raised in Sierra Leone, and reached elite levels only after accessing education, professional training systems, and international exposure abroad.
AFBN-SLE exists to ensure that future generations can access those pathways without having to leave home to be seen.
LOOKING FORWARD
AFBN-SLE is preparing for sustainable growth through:
• Pilot youth development programs
• School-based partnerships
• Academic and athletic development hubs
• Global collaboration
• Measurable impact reporting
Our long-term goal is to position Sierra Leone as a respected contributor to global sport, leadership, and opportunity.
JOIN US
AFBN-SLE welcomes collaboration with schools, educators, coaches, institutions, and partners who share a commitment to youth development through sport and education.
Together, we can build structured pathways that transform talent into lasting opportunity.
